Volunteer Efforts for Development Concerns (VEDCO) in partnership with St. Mary’s Hospital- Lacor with support from Riva Foundation is due to implement a Hospital Garden Project in Gulu District. The project is intended to enhance the nutritional needs of the project beneficiaries as well as expanding the hospital’s income stream to meet the hospital emerging competing needs while ensuring sustainability for the garden project.

 VEDCO is seeking to recruit a suitably qualified, experienced, dynamic and highly motivated FARM MANAGER to be part of its team in Gulu District.

Job purpose:

 To develop and manage the garden project while building capacity for the hospital to effectively manage and monitor the project using innovations that promote environmental sustainability which local communities can easily adopt.


Key Result Areas:

Duties and Responsibilities:

 -Supervise and coordinate farm activities, such as planting, irrigation, harvesting, grading, marketing, and record keeping.

-Plan and conduct training activities for hospital staff and communities in agronomy, nutritional practices, mentoring and monitor their performance.

-Maintaining and monitoring the quality of yields for poultry, livestock and crop.

-Take lead and successfully conduct harvesting and marketing of farm products including crops, poultry and livestock.

-Maintain and demonstrate clear knowledge of pests and diseases management and control.

-Provide full support in the procurement of farm supplies such as seeds, fertilizers, pesticides among others.

-Plan for project production against project funds and maintain farm progression against budget parameter.

-Collect funds from the sales of garden products (crop, livestock & poultry) and hand it over to the project accountant for banking.

-Plan monthly and quarterly review meetings and provide feedback to VEDCO and Lacor hospital on the progress of the project.

-Maintain accurate & up to date farm records and prepare both narrative and financial monthly, quarterly and annual reports to be submitted to Riva Foundation and to Lacor hospital.

-Carry out any other duty as may be assigned to you by your supervisor.


Qualifications, Technical Skills, Experience & Knowledge

-Possession of a Bachelors degree or Diploma in Agribusiness, Agriculture and Animal Production Management, Science in General Agriculture, Agricultural engineering and any other related courses.

-Substantial, demonstrable practical experience in agricultural practice of at least one year.

- Good understanding of modern farming methods, commitment to animal welfare and an interest in, and understanding of, the ways in which farming impacts the environment.

-Possession of a high degree of awareness of marketing, customer demand, food standards and sustainability.

-Previous hands-on farming experience and technical knowledge.

-Self-motivation and the ability to motivate others.

-Willingness to be part of, and closely work with VEDCO and St Mary’s Lacor Hospital.

-Experience in budgeting, budget monitoring and expenditure forecasting.

-Good management skills

-Sales and marketing skills;

-Negotiation skills;

-Genuine commitment to farming;

-Good Leadership skills with ability to  build capacity in crop, livestock and poultry  Management

-Reporting and organizational skills

-Analytical and  problem solving skills

-Must be fluent in Acholi & English languages
