VEDCO will consolidate achievements made in subsequent years but also invest further in capacity building for food and nutrition security management, agricultural marketing and policy advocacy. VEDCO’s intervention strategies will be organised in five (5) major thrusts: Food and Nutrition Security, Agricultural Trade Development, Communication and Advocacy, Community Energy Access and Organizational Development. Each thrust is further organised in strategic objectives under which specific actions with gender , environment and  HIV/AIDS are Mainstreamed.


To increase access to appropriate knowledge and technology relevant for sustainable food production and equitable utilisation.

To achieve this objective VEDCO will intervene through the following;

  1. Improved access to high quality Agro inputs, animal breeds and production technologies: VEDCO shall buy and distribute quality agro inputs to female and male farmer, avail and train farmers on use of labour saving technologies and link farmers to local input dealers. VEDCO shall demonstrate and equip farmers with post-harvest produce management technologies, train farmers on safe use of chemicals and establish school gardens for demonstration to pupils. VEDCO shall link with research institutions in order to provide improved breeds of livestock.
  2. Improved Practices for Sustainable utilisation and management of natural resources:VEDCO shall purchase and supply tree seedlings, establish tree nurseries at regional level, facilitate tree planting events and train farmers on soil and water conservation techniques, including water harvesting.
  3. Improved food utilisation among targeted farmers’ households:VEDCO shall train farmers on food utilization and preparation, train on basic nutrition principles, organize meetings to link farmers to product development forums with farmers, link with nutrition and health care service providers to reach out to targeted communities, provide nutritional emergency care for vulnerable segments and conduct periodic food and nutrition status assessment.
  4. Improved sanitation and hygiene practices among target farmers: VEDCO shall train female  and male farmers on proper hygiene practices and support access to clean water for domestic use using boreholes.
  5. Increased farmers access to extension services: VEDCO shall train female and male community based extension workers and provide them with toolkits, train staff on extension service delivery, production of IEC materials, conduct information/knowledge sharing meetings and conduct stakeholder and programme review meetings. VEDCO shall also establish partnerships with HIV/AIDS service providers and train staff on impact assessment.
  6. Farmer- led institutions developed and strengthened: VEDCO shall train male and female farmers in institutional development, train women leaders in confidence building, planning and visioning and on gender issues. To monitor growth of the institutions, sub-county review meetings, and community planning meetings at group level.




Strategic objective: To increase access to local, national, regional and international markets for priority products for female and male farmers.

This strategic objective will be achieved through;

  1. Improved farmers’ access to market information: VEDCO shall train farmers and staff in access, interpretation and sharing of market information, collect, repackage, share and disseminate market information to farmers and buyers and conduct regular data collection to update the market information data bank
  2. Improved value addition of selected products among target farmers: VEDCO shall co-finance farmers to acquire and train them on use value addition technologies and maintaining product quality, establish bulking centres and /or small warehouses, grain silos and conduct learning visits for farmers’ associations on value addition.
  3. Development of Value chains for selected crops and animal products: VEDCO shall cconduct market chain analysis for selected enterprises, stakeholders meetings for value chain actors and monitor performance of the value chains of the selected enterprises.
  4. Increased farmers’ capacity to participate In Agro Marketing: VEDCO shall train  the staff, existing farmers’ groups and marketing associations  in entrepreneurship skills and market oriented production. Farmers shall be facilitated to participate in district level agric trade shows, carry out collective planning and VEDCO shall establish and equip existing CBRCs with information for farmers to access.


Strategic objective: Upscale female and male farmers effective participation in policy processes on issues affecting agricultural production and marketing at all levels.

This strategic objective will be achieved through;

  1. Developing and implementing advocacy strategies on issues that affect agricultural production and marketing: VEDCO shall review her strategy on advocacy to include climate change, develop and review advocacy strategies on issues of land, access to market, access to inputs, introduce farmers to key policies on land, access to markets, inputs, LG planning and budget, conduct farmers joint meetings to develop common positions and Lobby parliament on issues of agricultural production and marketing. Open campaigns on identified issues shall be held and local councils facilitated to hold meetings to address farmers’ issues.
  2. Strengthening knowledge and information management system at institutional and programme level: Research to establish evidence on land, trade, seed and climate change issues, research and publish policy briefs and fact sheets, share information through Radio and Television talk shows,public dialogues, news paper articles and inserts and VEDCO website, publish annual reports, news letters and other IEC materials and conduct writeshops to document best practices.
  3. Building and strengthening strategic alliances to address production constraints and access to markets: Subscribe to networks, support staff and farmers to participate in international & regional meetings, support farmers and staff to participate in partners collective activities and support staff and farmers to participate in strategic events (WED, WFD etc).


Strategic objective: To increase equitable and sustainable access to household energy services for improved farmers livelihoods.

This strategic objective will be achieved through:

  1. Increased farmer’s knowledge on utilization of efficient and sustainable energy technologies and services: VEDCO shall conduct people centered- action research on potential energy sources and services relevant for improved household livelihoods and agric. productivity, share with and train women and men farmers on sustainable utilization of energy technologies, services and practices and collaborate with actors in the energy sector to develop and disseminate appropriate IEC materials on energy options
  2. Improved access to alternative energy technologies and services for female and male farmers : VEDCO shall identify actors dealing in energy sources relevant for improved agric. productivity and household welfare and conduct meetings to link VEDCO and farming community to energy entrepreneurs, dealers, micro-finance institutions and technicians.


Strategic objective: To strengthen VEDCO institutions’ management systems for effective service delivery.

In order to build strong VEDCO and farmer institutions’ management systems, efforts will be made to:

  1. Strengthen VEDCO’s governance structures: Build the board and management capacity in various governance skills, review and update organizational structure to match growth, develop,  review institutional manuals and facilitate regular board meetings and facilitate field visits for the   board and management.
  2. Strengthen VEDCO management systems: Review and upgrade management systems – finance and human resource and administration , develop and ope-rationalize a participatory M&E plan, train staff on the use of the M&E system, carry out baseline surveys, conduct programme evaluation exercises, develop a computerized database system, conduct annual review, planning and budgeting meetings to reflect on programs
  3. Strengthen gender Mainstreaming in the organisation: Build staff capacity to mainstream gender and implement the organisational gender policy
  4. Reduce staff susceptibility and vulnerability to HIV/AIDS: recruit competent Staff in HIV/ AIDS, train other staff on HIV/AIDS mainstreaming and integration, create awareness on HIV/AIDS, and allocate resources for implementing the HIV/AIDS work place policy.
