VEDCO’s statement on International Women’s Day 2016.

8/March/2016

VEDCO recognizes the fundamental role women play in National development. Women are key actors in creating peace and security right from the household, community and national level. Women’s role in Agricultural sector cannot be over emphasized.

Smallholder farmers majority of which are women (85%) have continued to engage in agricultural production thus providing food for over 30 million Ugandans while ensuring availability of raw materials for agricultural based industries. Despite numerous responsibilities, women still carry on their social and reproductive role with its underlying responsibilities of care giving, nurturing children all aimed at creating an inclusive and sustainable development.

Despite the pivotal role women pray in agricultural sector they are still faced with numerous gender inequalities which include gender disparities in access and control over productive resources like land, limited participation in agricultural marketing, sexual and gender based violence and also limited participation in household, community and national decision making.

VEDCO through her mandate of Agricultural Entrepreneurship Development will continue to address gender inequalities that exist in agricultural sector by applying Gender Action Learning System (GALS) approach to empower women and communities to identify their opportunities, challenges and develop actions for positive change.

As we celebrate this year’s International Women’s day, we call upon government, development partners, private sector and other key stakeholders to provide the required support to enhance gender justice especially in Agricultural sector in Uganda.

HAPPY WOMEN’S DAY TO ALL UGANDANS: JOIN US IN A STRUGGLE TO FIGHT GENDER INEQUALITIES IN AGRICULTURAL SECTOR AS WE STRIVE TO ENSURE A FOOD, NUTRITION AND INCOME SECURE NATION.
